Yelena Petroukhina

My interest in clay is visceral. It has been my preferred medium since the first time I touched it. I have been exploring concept of home as a fragile state of a tangible structure and of a social contract. I reflect on my personal experience as a child and as an adult. I use textures and colors produced in soda kiln as meditation on the irrepressible and inevitable. Hard slab construction is perfect for creation of house forms. Geometry is important as part of strength, durability, and necessary balance. The bases for the “houses” are tall and airy, reflective of common frame construction. The height of the framing is meant to elevate the structures and create a sense of delicate equanimity.
