Carly Dahl

My work explores the constructed ideals of beauty and the often unattainable representations of women in contemporary society. The "perfect" figures depicted in these pieces symbolize the distorted standards imposed by Western beauty culture. These artworks psychologically present the pressures and identities women might face. While these expectations can be limiting, they expose the tension between imposed social pressure and the power to reclaim self-representation.

The blank faces in the artwork invite viewers to project themselves or others onto the figures, creating a space for reflection and identification. Drawing inspiration from fashion media and popular culture, my imagery mirrors the pervasive visual language of femininity. By incorporating my hand into the work, I reference the aesthetic of the source material to establish a personal connection to the subject matter, reasserting individuality within a mass-media representation.
