The diagonal as a design element has appeared in my tapestries over the years. So it was with much excitement that I took a workshop and learned a technique called "wedge weave "which originated with the Navajo around 1870. The weaving process of laying in the weft on a diagonal causes the selvedges to move in and out creating a slight zigzag on two of the edges. Aside from disturbing the rectilinear framing of the work, this approach offers a new roadmap for my energetic use of color. Most often it is my love of color and design that motivate my work, so using wedge weave opens new vistas for me. While the world falls apart around me, the visual excitement in the process of weaving becomes my antidote to chaos.
