My degrees are in printmaking and drawing. However, I consider myself a multimedia artist and the skills in these disciplines inform the figurative sculptures in my recent work. The forms are created from wood or wire armatures and then the figure is built utilizing papier-mâché, cloth, glue, twine, thread and wet medium. The buildup of sewn thread and twine are akin to the marks I might add to a drawing, and provide not only texture and movement but are also meant to create pathos for the characters I create. The roughness of the surfaces is a metaphor for how life scars the body and soul and the build-up of thread and cloth patchwork in certain areas is indicative of the constant self-mending, self-critiquing and reevaluation of my life and art.
