When the chord of August resonates low and unrelenting, and summer figures blend into landscapes like climbing vines, we surrender to the bloodless afternoons that mark Arkansas summers. In these moments of consuming heat, where do we meet, and who do we hold onto? In painting, I can explore swimming as transcendence, a complete unity with the world, while others investigate the intricate relationship between human bodies and their environment.
Winter transforms the river into a black line through snow. I retreat indoors where isolation shifts. Winter paintings unfold through windows, viewers on porches looking in.
Working documentarily, I capture intimate moments against the American South's backdrop. Subjects emerge from my immediate community. Realism anchors the work, yet figures dissolve into abstraction. Limited palettes intensify mood, while glazes create atmosphere.I honor home's complexities. I propose love and comfort as protest, finding beauty without nostalgia.
